For the first time, the UN BHR Forum will host a plenary session on human rights due diligence in the arms industry. This session will build on the plenary discussions and will explore how the arms trade can better align with International Human Rights Law (IHRL) to address the consequences of small arms proliferation in Latin America. Key topics include: human rights due diligence (HRDD) for the small arms sector, the risks of diversion and trafficking, and the responsibilities of manufacturers, investors, and advisers under the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) and the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT).
Speakers:
- Ambassador Francisca Méndez, Permanent Representative of Mexico to the UN Office in Geneva
- Rodrigo Pintado, Human Rights Coordinator of the Mexican Mission to the UN Office in Geneva
- Daniel Mack, Project Director, Arms Transfers and Diversion, Global Rights Compliance
- Carina Solmirano, Incoming Head, ATT Secretariat, Geneva
- Karla López, Dálogos, Guatemala
- Simon Cleobury, Head of Arms Control and Disarmament, Geneva Centre for Security Policy (Moderator)
This session will provide critical insights into preventing, mitigating, and addressing human rights violations linked to the arms trade.
