The briefing will focus on the upcoming criminal trial in Sweden against two executives of oil and gas exploration and production company Lundin Energy (now Orrön Energy), for the company’s complicity in international crimes committed in South Sudan from 1997 to 2003. The trial is the first where universal jurisdiction in a European country will be used to prosecute a national of another European country. Due to this, the trial could set an interesting precedent for corporate accountability cases where companies are operating in conflict-affected and high-risk regions.
