Guidance: Conducting business during armed conflict
What is the problem?
It is estimated that one-fourth of the global population resides in areas affected by armed conflict. The full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, along with the conflict between Israel and Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups, has once again brought attention to how companies can conduct business responsibly in conflict-affected areas.
Armed conflicts give rise to obligations under international humanitarian law (“IHL”). These obligations also extend to businesses. The UNDP Guidelines outline how comprehensive heightened human rights due diligence should be conducted in a manner that ensures adherence to international humanitarian and human rights laws when operating in conflict-affected regions.
How can we help?
This guidance aims to provide an overview of international humanitarian law, delineate the obligations placed on businesses, and outline how companies can engage in activities responsibly while ensuring compliance with IHL.
